When the nights turn cold, the bed is the first place you feel it. The good news is that a warmer bed rarely means a whole new bedroom. It usually comes down to three things: the right fill under you, the right fabric against you, and a layer or two you can add or take away. This guide walks through what actually makes bedding warm, how to size it so it drapes like a hotel bed, and the pieces from our Bedrooms and Christmas Shop collections we would put on a winter bed right now.

What makes bedding warm
Fill power and fill weight
With down, fill power tells you how much space one ounce of down takes up. Higher numbers mean larger clusters that trap more warm air for their weight. Around 600 is a good everyday level; 700 and above feels noticeably lofty and warm without being heavy. Fill weight is the total amount of down inside, usually listed in ounces. Two comforters with the same fill power can feel very different if one simply has more down in it, so look at both numbers together.
Down vs. down alternative
Natural down is the lightest way to get serious warmth, and it breathes well, so you are less likely to wake up clammy. Down-alternative and polyester fills are easier to wash at home, cost less and suit anyone who prefers to avoid feathers. If you run cold, choose down. If the comforter will see kids, pets and frequent washing, a polyester-filled comforter set is the easier everyday choice.
Fabric against your skin
The fabric you touch changes how warm a bed feels in the first few minutes. Flannel is brushed cotton with a soft, fuzzy surface that feels warm right away; heavier flannel is measured in GSM (grams per square meter), and around 170 GSM is a substantial weight. Velvet and faux fur feel plush and add a little insulation of their own. Crisp percale and sateen feel cooler, which is why many people switch to flannel or velvet for winter and back again in spring.
How to layer a winter bed
Layers beat one heavy blanket because you can adjust them. A simple winter formula:
- Base: flannel sheets or a flannel duvet cover for instant warmth.
- Core: a down or down-alternative comforter sized for your mattress (see below).
- Top layer: a quilt or coverlet folded across the bottom third of the bed. Pull it up on the coldest nights.
- Finish: a throw at the foot of the bed for reading, naps and that styled, layered look.
Stick to two or three colors across the layers. Cream, oatmeal and grey keep a winter bed calm; deep green, red and plaid bring it straight into the holidays.
Getting the size right
Comforter sizes are not standardized, and deeper mattresses swallow a lot of fabric. Before you buy, measure your mattress width and depth and compare them with the listed comforter dimensions. A queen mattress is 60 inches wide; a comforter around 90 inches wide gives you roughly 15 inches of drop on each side. If your mattress is extra deep, or you like the comforter to reach the bed frame, look at oversized or the next size up. A duvet cover should match your insert size closely so the insert does not bunch; corner ties inside the cover help keep it in place.
Care tips
Use a duvet cover over a down comforter so you can wash the cover often and the comforter rarely. Fluff down regularly and dry it fully on low heat with dryer balls when you do wash it. Wash flannel, velvet and faux fur in cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low to keep them soft. Always follow the care label for each product.
